What Is Cloud Infrastructure as Code (IaC)?
Infrastructure as Code, commonly called IaC, is an approach where infrastructure is defined and managed through configuration files instead of being configured manually through cloud consoles. It allows infrastructure deployment to follow repeatable software-engineering practices such as version control, review, testing, and automation.
How Does Infrastructure as Code Work?
Traditionally, an administrator might manually create:
- Virtual machines
- Networks
- Storage
- Firewall rules
- Load balancers
With cloud Infrastructure as Code, these resources are described in configuration files.
An IaC tool then communicates with infrastructure platforms and creates or modifies resources according to the configuration.
HashiCorp describes IaC as defining infrastructure declaratively in configuration files so specifications can be reviewed, tested, versioned, and automated.
What Can IaC Manage?
Infrastructure as Code can manage components such as:
| Infrastructure Area | Examples |
| Compute | Virtual machines and instances |
| Networking | Networks, subnets and security rules |
| Storage | Disks and object-storage resources |
| Platforms | Managed cloud services |
| DNS | DNS records and configuration |
Terraform, for example, can manage both cloud and on-premises resources through provider APIs.
Benefits of Infrastructure as Code
Consistency
Teams can recreate environments from the same configuration instead of manually repeating setup steps.
Version Control
IaC files can be stored in systems such as Git, allowing teams to track infrastructure changes.
Automation
Infrastructure deployment can become part of CI/CD workflows.
Reviewability
Engineers can inspect proposed infrastructure changes before applying them.
Terraform’s typical workflow includes write, plan, and apply, enabling teams to define resources, preview intended changes, and then execute them.
Is IaC Only for Large Organisations?
No. Even smaller environments can benefit when infrastructure needs to be reproducible or regularly modified.
However, teams still need appropriate security, code reviews, state management, testing, and access controls.
Conclusion
Infrastructure as Code helps organisations manage cloud infrastructure using structured, repeatable, and version-controlled configurations.
